About St. Lucy’s History

Saint Lucy, whose feast day is celebrated on December 13th, is a revered martyr and patron saint of the blind and those with eye ailments.

Born in Syracuse, Sicily, around 283 AD, Lucy dedicated her life to Christ at a young age, choosing to remain a virgin and give her dowry to the poor. Her faith and devotion, however, led to her persecution during the Diocletianic Persecution. According to tradition, when Lucy refused to renounce her faith and marry a pagan suitor, she was subjected to brutal torture, including having her eyes gouged out. Miraculously, her sight was restored, and she continued to stand firm in her faith until she was ultimately martyred.

Saint Lucy’s enduring legacy is one of courage, purity, and unwavering faith in the face of suffering.
