Why Pray the St. Lucy Novena?

Novenas are an important form of prayer. They have a long tradition and are usually accompanied by a promise. Most novenas are related to either a martyr or a vision of Christ. So by praying a novena, you’re able to pray for a saint to intercede for you. What makes a novena special is that they are usually said over several days. This added sacrifice in time and effort makes novenas a particularly powerful intercession.

For St. Lucy is the patron saint of eyes. During her martyrdom, her eyes were gouged out prior to her execution. So this novena prayer is said to be effective for people dealing with eye ailments or eye diseases.

How do you pray the Novena to St. Lucy?

The St. Lucy Novena is a nine day Novena. Every day you’ll repeat the same prayer, mention your intentions, and then conclude with an Our Father, A Hail Mary, and a Glory Be.

Saint Lucy Prayer

O God, our Creator and Redeemer,
mercifully hear our prayers

that as we venerate Your servant,
St. Lucy, for the light of faith
You did bestow upon her,
You would vouchsafe to
increase and to preserve this

same light in our souls,
that we may be able to avoid evil,
to do good, and to abhor nothing
so much as the blindness and
the darkness of evil and of sin.
Relying on Your goodness,
O God, we humbly ask You,

by the intercession of Your servant,
St. Lucy, that You would give

perfect vision to our eyes,
that they may serve for Your
greater honor and glory,
and the salvation of our souls
in this world, that we may come

to the enjoyment of the unfailing
light of the Lamb of God in paradise.
St. Lucy, virgin and martyr, hear
our prayers and obtain our petitions.
Amen.

St. Lucy

About St. Lucy, Virgin, Martyr

St. Lucy, also known as Saint Lucia or Saint Lucia of Syracuse, was a Roman Christian Martyr who died during the Diocletian Persecution. Her name means light. She is a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. And she is one of only eight women commemorated during the Mass. Her feast day is on December 13th, and she is perhaps the most famous of the virgin martyrs.

She was born into a wealthy family. Her father died when she was a child, and her mother suffered from a bleeding disorder. This caused her mother to worry about her daughter’s future since she could easily be with out parents. Lucy’s mother arranged a marriage for Lucy to a pagan man.

However, Lucy had no interest in this marriage. Instead, she wanted to dedicate her life to our lord. She wanted to become a consecrated virgin. She also wanted her mother to give her entire dowry to the poor.

When Lucy found out about the marriage, she prayed for her mother. Lucy frequently prayed to St. Agatha for her intercession to change her mother’s mind about the marriage. Then, St. Agatha appeared to her in a dream. In that dream, St. Agatha told Lucy that her mother would be cured of her bleeding disorder through faith.

Shortly after, Lucy’s mother was cured of her ailments, and her mother allowed Lucy to become a consecrated virgin. However, the man who she had been promised to in marriage was angry about this decision. His anger was amplified when he found out the dowry he was promised was given to the poor.

He sought revenge for this rejection and informed the local governor of Lucy’s Catholic faith, knowing that this would lead to her persecution.

The governor ordered that Lucy make a sacrifice to the image of the Roman Emporer. When she refused, her fate was sealed. The governor ordered her to the brothel as punishment.

According to tradition, Lucy miraculously became too heavy to move. The Roman guards and a team of oxen were unable to transport her.

According to another tradition, Lucy told the governor he would be punished for sentencing Lucy. This angered the governor, and he ordered her eyes to be gouged out.

Eventually, Lucy was sentenced to death. But another miracle occurred. The guards attempting to kill her were unable to. They stacked piles of wood around her and set fire to the wood. But the wood would not catch on fire. Lucy was eventually martyred when a Roman soldier stabbed in the heart with a sword.

After she had been martyred, Lucy’s eyes were said to have been restored to her body in preparation for the funeral. This is why she is considered the patron saint of eye problems and good eyesight.

Variations on the Saint Lucy Novena Prayers

There are several versions of the St. Lucy Novena prayer. These prayers can be substituted for the prayer above. They would replace all of the prayer that comes before the intention.

St. Lucy Novena Pray – Alternative One

O St Lucy, you preferred to let your eyes be torn out instead of denying the faith and defiling your soul; and God, through an extraordinary miracle, replaced them with another pair of sound and perfect eyes to reward your virtue and faith, appointing you as the protector against eye diseases.

I come to you for you to protect my eyesight and to heal the illness in my eyes.

O St Lucy, preserve the light of my eyes so that I may see the beauties of creation, the glow of the sun, the color of the flowers and the smile of children.

Preserve also the eyes of my soul, the faith, through which I can know my God, understand His teachings, recognize His love for me and never miss the road that leads me to where you, St Lucy, can be found in the company of the angels and saints.

St Lucy, protect my eyes and preserve my faith. Amen.

St. Lucy Novena Pray – Alternative Two

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Lucy as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate the love of You she showed from the time she was a young child.

St. Lucy, your father died when you were a young child, and your mother suffered from a bleeding disorder. Despite the lack of family stability in your childhood, you began on the path to serving God.

Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served!

You longed to devote yourself entirely to God and even consecrated your virginity to Him. You ultimately chose to give up your life for the Faith.

Pray for me, that I may live my life with as much devotion to God as you did. Pray that I may be eager to serve God in whatever ways He calls me to.

Concluding prayer that can be said at the end of every day

O! Glorious St Lucy, Virgin and Martyr, you greatly glorified the Lord by preferring to sacrifice your life rather than be unfaithful.

Come to our aid and, through the love of this same most loveable Lord, save us from all infirmities of the eyes and the danger of losing them.

Through your powerful intercession, may we spend our life in the peace of the Lord and be able to see Him with our transfigured eyes in the eternal splendor of the Celestial Homeland. Amen.

St Lucy, pray for us and for the most needy, to Christ our Lord. Amen.
