Born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195, he joined the Franciscan Order in 1220, adopting the name Anthony in honor of St. Anthony the Great. Known for his profound knowledge of Scripture, eloquent preaching, and deep spiritual insight, St. Anthony quickly gained a reputation as a gifted preacher, drawing large crowds wherever he spoke.

St. Anthony is known as the patron saint of lost items, a devotion that originated from a well-known story of a novice who stole a valuable book from him.

St. Anthony prayed for its return, and the novice not only brought the book back but also returned to the Order.
