Saint Peregrine is the patron saint of cancer patients. For anyone suffering with this awful illness Saint Peregrine can provide people with comfort, relief, and hope.

Saint Peregrine was born in 1260 at Forlì, Italy to an affluent family. At that time there was a lot of criticism and discontentment of the Pope. That is until the Pope sent Saint Philip Benizi of the Order of the Servites to Forlì.

St. Peregrine

Upon Saint Benizi’s arrival, he was beaten and mocked by crowds. Saint Peregrine even struck him. upon striking Saint Benizi, Peregrine immediately repented and asked Benizi for forgiveness. The moment had a major impact on Saint Peregrine, and Saint Benizi encouraged him to spend time prayer and serving the poor.

One day, while he was steadfastly praying, Saint Peregrine had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding a black habit and telling him to go to Siena and join the order of Servites. He went to Siena as the Blessed Virgin Mary told him to, and he was ordained a priest.

After his ordination, he returned to Forlì and started a Servite monetary serving the poor and people afflicted with terminal illnesses.

When Saint Peregrine was in his sixties, he developed cancerous growth on his foot. Soon it got infected and caused him immense suffering. He was going to have it amputated.

However, the night before his surgery, He had a vision of Jesus coming down from the cross and touching the cancer on his leg. The next morning when the doctor came to perform the surgery, they discovered that his leg had healed.

Stories of this miracle quickly spread, and people far and wide would begin to visit Saint Peregrine. They would ask him to intercede for them, and some people were even miraculous healed.

Saint Peregrine went on to live to the age of 85 and died in 1345.

In 1609, he was declared blessed by Pope Paul V. Pope Benedict XIII finally canonized him in 1726. We now celebrate his feast day every 1st of May.

Short Prayer to St. Peregrine

O God, in Saint Peregrine you gave us an outstanding example of faith and patience. We humbly ask you that, by imitating him and with the help of his prayers, we may believe more fully in your healing help, bear the suffering of this life without wavering, and come with joy to the peace of heaven. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Prayer for Grace in Suffering

Glorious wonder-worker, St. Peregrine, you answered the divine call with a ready spirit, and forsook all the comforts of a life of ease and all the empty honors of the world to dedicate yourself to God in the Order of His holy Mother.

You labored manfully for the salvation of souls. In union with Jesus crucified, you endured painful sufferings with such patience as to deserve to be healed miraculously of an incurable cancer in your leg by a touch of His divine hand.

Obtain for me the grace to answer every call of God and to fulfill His will in all the events of life. Enkindle in my heart a consuming zeal for the salvation of all men.

Deliver me from the infirmities that afflict my body especially…

(mention your intentions)

Obtain for me also a perfect resignation to the sufferings it may please God to send me, so that, imitating our crucified Savior and His sorrowful Mother, I may merit eternal glory in heaven.

St. Peregrine, pray for me and for all who invoke your aid.
