The St. Joseph the Worker Novena asks Saint Joseph to intercede on our behalf. The feast day to Saint Joseph the Worker is relatively new having been created in 1955 by Pope Pius XII. The feast day celebrates the life of Saint Joseph who integrated the common life of being a father and husband with the spiritual life of being the step father to our lord Jesus Christ.

Saint Joseph is the patron saint of The Catholic Church and the guardian of the holy Family. Saint Joseph the worker is the perfect example of how we can become saints by doing our work and following God’s purpose for us.

About St. Joseph the Worker Novena

Novena Starts: April 22nd

Feast Day: May 1st

Day 1 – St. Joseph the Worker Novena Prayer

Make the Sign of the Cross.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Recite the novena to St. Joseph the Worker

Joseph, by the work of your hands and the sweat of your brow, you supported Jesus and Mary, and had the Son of God as your fellow worker.

Teach me to work as you did, with patience and perseverance, for God and for those whom God has given me to support.

Teach me to see in my fellow workers the Christ who desires to be in them, that I may always be charitable and forbearing towards all.

Grant me to look upon work with the eyes of faith, so that I shall recognize in it my share in God’s own creative activity and in Christ’s work of our redemption, and so take pride in it.

When it is pleasant and productive, remind me to give thanks to God for it. And when it is burdensome, teach me to offer it to God, in reparation for my sins and the sins of the world.

O good father Joseph! I beg you, by all your sufferings, sorrows and joys, to obtain for me what I now ask.

[mention your Intention]

Obtain for all those who have asked my prayers, everything that is useful to them in the plan of God. Be near to me in my last moments that I may eternally sing the praises of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Amen.

Pray an Our Father.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Heavenly Father, in the beginning You gave us the Garden with its fruit and commanded us to care for it. In doing so, You invited us into Your holy and creative work.

Your holy servant Joseph clearly reflected You by embracing the call to holy labor.

St. Joseph, Model of Workers, while humanity’s understanding of work suffered after the Fall, you were able to work as God intended—in union with Him.

At the workbench next to Christ, you brought human labor closer to the mystery of the Redemption.

Teach me how to make my daily responsibilities and tasks an offering to our Lord. Help my work—no matter how simple or mundane—reflect the marvelous gift of redemption I’ve been given through my baptism.

During the creation of the world, Our Father looked upon the work He had done and saw that it was good. Through your intercession and guidance, St. Joseph, I pray that God may look upon my work and find it just as pleasing.

I ask that you also pray for this intention close to my heart. . .

[mention your Intention]

St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us!

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Alternative Saint Joseph the Worker Prayer #2

Alternative Saint Joseph the Worker Prayer #2

Dear Saint Joseph, I thank God for thy privilege of being able to work side-by-side with Jesus in the carpenter shop of Nazareth.

As a token of thy own gratitude to God, obtain for me the grace to respect the dignity of labor and ever to be content with the position in life, however lowly, in which it may please Divine Providence to place me.

Teach me to work for God and with God in the spirit of humility and prayer, as thou did, so that I may offer my toil in union with the sacrifice of Jesus in the Holy Mass as a reparation for my sins, and gain rich merit for heaven.

St Joseph, I, thy unworthy child, greet thee. Thou art the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate thee.

Thou knowest that I have special confidence in thee and that, after Our Lord and Our Lady, I place all my hope of salvation in thee, for thou art especially powerful with God and will never abandon thy faithful servants.

Therefore I humbly invoke thee and commend myself, with all who are dear to me and all that belongs to me, to thy intercession.

I beg thee, by thy love for Our Lord and Our Lady, not to abandon me during life and to assist me at the hour of my death. Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin, obtain for me a pure, humble, charitable mind and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be my guide, my father and my model through life that I may merit to die as Thou didst in the arms of Our Lord and Our Lady.

Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, I raise my heart to thee to implore thy powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death and the special grace I now implore:

[Mention Your Intention]

Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel confident that thy prayers on my behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. Amen.

Remember, most pure spouse of Mary, ever Virgin, my loving protector, Saint Joseph, that no one ever had recourse to thy protection or asked for thy aid without obtaining relief. Confiding, therefore, in thy goodness, I come before thee and humbly implore thee. Despise not my petitions, foster-father of the Redeemer, but graciously receive them. Amen.

Concluding Prayer – Pope Leo XIII’s Prayer to St Joseph (from Quamquam Pluries)

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction, and having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection.

By that charity wherewith thou wert united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly love with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eye upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength.

Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, the chosen off-spring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness.

And even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so now defend God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.
