Dear Jesus, I have sinned against God and you.  I have gone against you and hurt you with each and every sin I have committed.  I am not worthy of your love, but you are my only hope.  Please save me, and please forgive me, for I am lost without you.

About Saint Matthew

Saint Matthew Writing the Gospel

We learn from the New Testament that St. Matthew was the son of a man named Alpheus. Matthew was a Galilean. He is sometimes referred to in the Gospels as Levi.

Saint Matthew(Matthew the Apostle) is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. According to Catholic tradition, he was one of the four Evangelists as the author of the Gospel of Matthew and is sometimes called Matthew the Evangelist.

The Gospels tell us that Matthew was a tax collector even though he was Jewish. This means other Jews would have despised him and viewed him as a traitor working for the Romans and for having a very financially lucrative career. However, he could likely read in Greek and Aramaic because he was a tax collector.

Matthew witnessed Jesus’ ministry and was one of the people who said Jesus Ascended into Heaven.
We do not know where Matthew ministered and evangelized after Pentecost. But it’s believed by early church fathers(St. Irenaeus & St. Clement of Alexandria) suggest that Matthew preached to the Jews and Judea before moving to other places.

It is believed that Matthew wrote his Gospel in 41 or 50 A.D. His Gospel is aimed at a Jewish audience; hence it was written in Aramaic, the language the ancient Jews spoke. Since it was written for the Jews, the Gospel of Matthew has many references to the Old Testament to prove that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament Prophecies.

We have no details on the death of Saint Matthew. But tradition holds that he was martyred.
In art, St. Matthew is often depicted as a man. Traditionally the four animals mentioned in Revelation 4:7 are associated with the four Gospel writers.

“The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a bull, the third living creature had a human face, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.” (Revelation 4:7)

Saint Matthew’s feast day is September 21st, and he is the Patron saint of Bankers, Accountants, Civil Servants, Security Guards, Book Keepers, and Tax Collectors.
