About St. Thomas More Novena

Novena Starts: June 13th

Feast Day: June 22nd

Birth: 1478

Death: 1535

Patron saint of adopted children lawyers, civil servants, politicians, and difficult marriages

Sir Thomas More, known as Saint Thomas More in the Catholic Church, was a prominent English lawyer, scholar, statesman, and martyr. He lived during the early 16th century and his life was marked by significant political and religious changes.

Thomas More was born on February 7, 1478, in London, England, into a respected and prosperous family. He received a classical education and displayed exceptional intellectual abilities from a young age. He attended Oxford University and later studied law at Lincoln’s Inn in London.

More became a successful lawyer and was known for his wit and wisdom. His legal career flourished, and he held various public offices, including the position of Under-Sheriff of London. He was also a member of the English Parliament. More’s integrity and commitment to justice earned him a reputation for fairness and impartiality.

During his life, More developed close friendships with influential scholars and thinkers, including the renowned Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus. More himself was a prolific writer and scholar. His most famous work, “Utopia,” published in 1516, is a satirical exploration of an ideal society, addressing issues of social and political justice.

More was a devout Catholic and deeply committed to his faith. As the Protestant Reformation gained momentum in Europe, King Henry VIII sought an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. More, who opposed the annulment and Henry’s separation from the Catholic Church, resigned from his position as Chancellor of England in 1532.

More’s refusal to accept King henry VIII appointed as the head of the Church of England led to his arrest and imprisonment in the Tower of London. He was tried for treason and found guilty in 1535. Despite being offered clemency if he recognized King Henry’s authority, More refused to compromise his religious convictions. On July 6, 1535, he was executed by beheading.

St. Thomas More‘s steadfast commitment to his faith and principles, even in the face of persecution, earned him recognition as a martyr. He was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1935. He is remembered as a symbol of moral courage, integrity, and religious freedom, and his life and writings continue to inspire people around the world.

Alternative St. Thomas More Novena Prayers

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy martyr for the Church, you used your talents to bring God’s love and mercy to earth. Yet you realized that human fame and glory were momentary and fleeting. In your practice of law, you understood and were loyal first to God’s eternal law spoken through the successors of the Apostles. While a servant of the king, you were a servant to the Church first.

Help me to see that loyalty to God’s laws must be the first part of my ties and responsibilities with others. Strengthen me to seek out what the Church teaches. Give me the wisdom to make the right choice, and the fortitude to carry it out. This I ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
